QUICK NEWS

Gemini Surges Ahead in App Store Battle

Google’s Gemini has overtaken OpenAI’s ChatGPT to become the top free app on the U.S. Apple App Store, powered largely by its “Nano Banana” image-editing feature which has driven huge user engagement.

Fiverr Lays Off 250, Leaning Hard into AI

Freelancing platform Fiverr is laying off about 250 employees (roughly 30% of its staff) as part of a strategic pivot to becoming an “AI-first” company, aiming for a leaner structure and more automation in customer support, fraud detection, and other operations.

YouTube Powers Up Shorts Creators with Generative AI Tools

YouTube is rolling out new AI features for Shorts creators, including “Veo 3 Fast” (a lower-latency text-to-video model), motion transfer, style filters, and a tool to turn video dialogue into music soundtracks—all aimed at helping creators produce content more easily and creatively.

LATEST UPDATE

Google Introduces Agent Payments Protocol for Safer AI Transactions

Our Take

Google has rolled out the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an “open protocol” designed to make AI-driven purchases safer and more transparent. By establishing a verifiable trail for every agent-initiated transaction, AP2 aims to tackle concerns around authorization, authenticity, and accountability when AI agents buy on behalf of humans.

Key Highlights

  • Dual Mandates: AP2 uses two cryptographically signed contracts:

    1. Intent mandate – confirms a user authorizes an agent to search, negotiate, and explore purchases.

    2. Cart mandate – grants permission to complete the purchase.

  • Rule-Based Autonomy: When a human isn’t directly involved, users issue a detailed intent mandate with guardrails (e.g., price caps, preferred dates). Once conditions are met, the agent can independently create a cart mandate.

  • Practical Example: If a user asks for a trip within a set budget, the agent can scan flights and hotels, select a suitable option, and finalize the booking with a cryptographic signature.

The Bigger Picture

AP2’s adoption will hinge on ecosystem buy-in. That said, early support is strong: more than 60 major merchants and payment providers—including Mastercard, American Express, Accenture, and Adobe—are already onboard, signaling a fast-moving shift toward agent-led commerce.

Microsoft Leans Toward Anthropic Over OpenAI

Microsoft has introduced an automatic AI model selector in Visual Studio Code that picks the best model for coding tasks—by default, it assigns developers to Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.

The move signals a clear vote of confidence in Anthropic’s technology over OpenAI’s, especially notable after Microsoft recently allowed OpenAI to use rival cloud providers as part of its path to going public.

Adding to the shift, a leaked internal email shows Microsoft has been advising its own engineers for months that “based on internal benchmarks, Claude Sonnet 4 is the recommended model to use.”

OpenAI Tightens Safeguards for Teen Users

OpenAI has introduced a new policy that puts teen safety above privacy and autonomy, following a wrongful death lawsuit from parents of a minor who died by suicide after interactions with ChatGPT.

The updated rules add extra guardrails: if a minor initiates conversations about suicide, ChatGPT may notify their parents—or, in severe cases, alert local authorities.

A key hurdle will be verifying users’ ages. While OpenAI is still developing a reliable system to confirm whether someone is over 18, the platform will in the meantime default to stricter protections for suspected underage users.
